Who's a Fat Bastard - Island Dreams

July 25, 2014

I could get used to this ten o'clock wake up thing. I woke up at eight, had a pee, and went back to bed for two more hours. I'm becoming a teenager again! I napped twice last week, and liked it.
Today was another travel day. We had a late start and It's always hard to sleep and run. We never got to Bowser until 8:30 last night. Kept them up way too late and now were blowing town twenty minutes out of bed! Wham Bam thank you Ma'am. Our Bowser folk are two of Lisa's oldest friends. It's always great to see them even if it is only for a couple of hours. This is way cool.
He took trees from here.
Former home of trees
Had them milled on site, and built this.

He did an amazing job and did a lot of the work himself. He's off work right now with an injury. Hoping he gets well soon. Their hospitality was, as always, great.
Speaking of Hospitals, our friend Alida is in hospital in Nanaimo. We are going to try to see her on the way off the island Sunday Morning. Continuing our roll of near misses we called our Fanny Bay friend only to discover she was waiting in the ferry line up in Nanaimo. Screw it! We stopped at QFC in Courtney, or Lisa did at least. We have Elvis and Nutmeg with us so I was on Dog duty. The windows are open, they have water and some island station is playing some wicked tunes. It also gave me a chance to grab something to eat. I remember when fast food was a drive thru.
Morning fast food snack
.An avocado and a piece of cheese, fifteen seconds! You can't get any faster than that. When Lisa came back she had a roasted chicken, kielbasa and and some chicarrones.
Mmmmmmm lunch
We stopped at the park by the river on the North side of Courtney.  It has lots of picnic tables, and the dogs have room to run.
Courtney picnic
Take me to the river.

After lunch we headed straight for the Campbell River and the Devlin Family Hillbilly Hoedown. I had been trying to reach Meaghan for two days with no luck. I only had her cell and it turns out they don`t have cell coverage where they live.
Perhaps we should have.
Perhaps this is an omen. If the stop sign can`t survive what chance do I have. We showed up right at dinner time. Pizza....yay...There were dozens of pizzas, which is good because there were dozens of kids. Those Island folks are breeders!
Some of the kids
I sat and played some guitar. Accompanied by a young ukeleleist. Is that even a word?
The girls got rythm
There are five or six trailers set up with families camping around the property.
Any excuse for a campout
They also have a great pond that unfortunately, doesn't have enough water in it for swimming this year.

Lisa was looking forward to being backhoed into the pond.
Elvis was being a jerk. They have a couple of cougar hounds that Elvis just didn't like. He kept attacking them and running them off.
Elvis...still the king
It was funny until they stopped running, they turned and started baying and Elvis freaked out. Man those dogs are loud.
After dark we had a fire going and enjoyed a peaceful bug infested torture session around the campfire. I had some much OFF on me I was dripping. It didn't help. If they can kill me, they'll never have to hunt again.
Can of gas....... instant fire
We played a few songs and then we were entertained by Matty. He is a great kid who was so happy to be camping he entertained us with a song about being happy camping.
Matty rockin out!
A little long for AM airplay but definitely entertaining. About 11:00 Lisa and I called it a night. We are staying in town with Stu who was working at the Royal Coachman. We stopped in for a drink and a quick hello. I said I would stay up to chat when he got home, I lied. That's why I'm posting this Saturday morning.

That's all I got.
Till next time
Peace Out Y'all
