Who's a Fat Bastard - Our very first date

June 22, 2014

I did nothing but enjoy the company of my wife, all day long. First of all, the day is not so long when it starts at 10. The phone rang for the first time at about 9:30. We don't keep a phone in our bedroom for exactly this reason. I heard it ringing out in the office. I was so perfectly warm and comfortable, I was surprised how easy it was to ignore the phone. I lay there watching Lisa pretend to sleep for another half hour before I got up and made the coffee.
A couple of hard boiled eggs and a tomato for breakfast and I was ready for anything. Our very first "date" was more than thirteen years ago. I was standing near the catering truck on So Weird ,working out the details of a round of golf with with a friend. I was told we were a threesome and asked if I knew a fourth. That's when Lisa says " I play golf."
We shared a golf cart the next day. A cooler of beer and a love of the game. We have been together ever since. So on our wedding anniversary, ten of the eleven years, we have played golf. We spent our tenth snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef. A very big water hazard!
I made a tuna salad for lunch just as Gord and Penny showed up with a card. We sat and chatted out on the deck for twenty minutes or so. Made loose and vague plans for later.
We made it to Rupert Park pitch and Putt about 2:00 pm. Six groups ahead of us, and four behind when we got there. It was slow going. That's why we never play on the weekends. It gave us a lot of time to sit, talk and reminisce about the last twelve years. We've had our ups and downs, a lot of laughs and a few tears. But mostly we talked about that day twelve years ago. About the friends and family who made it special.
We had a game today! We play skins, three points available on every whole. Score, KP and Birdie Bonus. Only the score carries over. Lisa always hits first when it's just us playing. There are now four or five groups behind us. Lisa walks up and drops her shot six feet from the pin seventy yards away.

Oohs and aahs from the gallery. "Nice shot" I said.

Then I hit it like a little girl. Ten yards short. Up and in for me. Lisa lipped out her birdie for a push. One point for Lisa. I'm not going to give you the play by play, hole by hole. It was a beautiful day and I was spending it with the woman I love, doing something we both love to do. We skipped a few holes, we went from thirteen to sixteen due to an excessive lack of ability to hit a golf ball by everyone in front of us. I won seventeen to make the score ten/ten. If we tie on the last hole the KP is the decider. (that's closest to .the pin) I stepped bravely onto the Tee box at eighteen. Staring down the sixty five yards to glory. Sand wedge in hand, I addressed the ball. "Hello Ball, how's it going for you today?" Focus, become one with the ball. Head down, follow through..... Didn't happen. Five yards short of the green, fifty feet from the hole. Lisa, who is usually throwing lawn darts at this point, also missed the green. We both ended up with pars and with no KP, we ended in a Ten/Ten tie. How's that for symbolism. Lisa is the only golf partner I have ever kissed on the eighteenth green.

Headed over to the Rivers Reach pub for dinner with Gord and Penny. Had a nice low carb meal. Chicken wings, Calamari  and lettuce wraps.
Gord and his greek salad
Penny and her onion soup
We were talking about getting the dogs and watching the sunset from Burnaby Mountain. Never happened. I nodded off in the chair and Lisa let me snooze. What a great day.  Just like that day twelve years ago.

That's all I got.
Till next time
Peace Out Y'all
